Day 1 Nauta Port, Amazon River

Rainforest - Amazon
Overview:

Met on arrival at Iquitos Airport for a 1.5 hour scenic road transfer through the Peruvian countryside to the small city of Nauta, the oldest town in the state of Loreto. This village, founded in the 1930s, is very important to the local river communities as it is the port where they come to sell their produce. Upon arrival, you will be assisted by the crew to check in and settle into your cabin aboard the M/V ‘Delfin II’ which is waiting to take you on your amazing Amazon journey.

As the vessel departs you can relax with a drink, before enjoying a first night ‘welcome dinner’ of Peruvian regional dishes, followed by a selection of exotic Amazonian fruits. This evening the guides will give a brief orientation talk about life on board and go through a routine safety drill. Then, using charts and short videos, they will outline details of the journey ahead, the history and geography of the Amazon Basin, the places you will visit and the animals and vegetation you could expect to see. Finally, while being entertained with a little live music, you might like to enjoy a nightcap on the upper deck before retiring.

Day 2 Amazon River – Visit Belluda Cano Creek and Dorado River

Pink dolphin

Be up early to catch the sun on the river. After breakfast – a buffet featuring a choice of traditional breakfast egg dishes as well as Peruvian specialties and fresh-squeezed fruit juices – board one of the comfortable excursion skiffs for your first adventure, an exploration to see and photograph two different species of freshwater dolphins found in the Amazon – including the unusual pink ones found along the Ucayali River. The people of the Amazon believe that these dolphins turn into humans to steal handsome men or pretty women from their villages during celebrations. As well, the birds will be out and active, flying gracefully across the Amazon skies. Return to the vessel and continue the journey along the river.

Reboarding the skiffs in the afternoon you will head for the Dorado River; this area of the Amazon River’s transitional forest is home to abundant wildlife and it is recommended that you bring your binoculars as there will also be opportunities to observe myriad species of birds such as Snail Kites, Festive Parrots, endangered Scarlet Macaws, Olive Spotted Hummingbirds, Amazonian Parrotlets and Wood Creepers, among others. And when the night shift appears, you’ll encounter a whole new world of adventure.

Return to the vessel in the early evening, in time for ‘Happy Hour’ and snacks on the observation deck while cruising further upstream, continuing your journey.

Day 3 Amazon River – Clavero Lake and Yarapa River / Puerto Miguel

Delfin community visit Amazon Cruise

After breakfast board one of the excursion skiffs for an exploration of Clavero Lagoon where you will have the chance to explore deep into the rainforest and discover its diversity of flora and fauna. Returning to the boat in the late morning, you have some time to relax before lunch. Venture along the Yarapa River, where you can explore the tributary in the kayaks. Then you will board the skiffs to visit the community of Puerto Miguel and meet local villagers who have called Amazonia their home for generations. You can visit the schoolhouse and the arts and crafts market which is run by the women of the community.

Day 4 Amazon Cruise Concludes – Visit the Manatee Rescue Centre

On arrival at Nauta Port the guides will assist you with disembarkation and transfer you by skiffs to the shore. Board the comfortable air-conditioned bus for the return drive to Iquitos. This remote city, accessible only by river or air, is a bustling place that was once a rich centre of the rubber industry. It still boasts some stylish mansions dating from the days of its ‘rubber boom’, among them the Casa de Fierro (Iron House) that was designed by Gustave Eiffel for the Paris Exhibition of 1889 and later sent out unassembled to be rebuilt on its present site.

Manatee

On the way to Iquitos Airport, there will be time for a stop to visit the Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre of River Animals (ACOBIA) which is close to Iquitos. Here you will have the opportunity to meet baby manatees and learn about these docile creatures and why they are endangered. In addition to the manatees there are other animals cared for by the centre including monkeys and river otters. On arrival at the airport, the guides will assist you with your baggage and check-in and will wait with you until you are ready to board your flight to Lima.

We will tailor the perfect holiday to suit your needs.
