Patagonia – Tailor-Made

So Many Ways To Explore

Alex Burridge – South America Travel Centre

In addition to the many physical wonders of Patagonia you also have the choice of staying in a wide variety of beautiful places; hotels, lodges, estancias and unique properties.  Here we highlight some of our and our client’s favourites.  This is another part of our job that we love, first exploring and then sharing our knowledge with you so your trip is tailored individually just for you.

Here we take a brief look at the diversity of properties (it is not intended to cover all properties simply to showcase the vast choice).  Diverse in style, in what they offer and their location.

1.  Traditional Hotels, 2. Boutique Lodges, 3. Unique Properties, 4. Estancias

Our advice is to take your time when exploring Patagonia – it has a lot to offer and is certainly not just a destination for trekkers (though it has some amazing walks, hikes and treks).

Traditional Hotels

Las Torres (74 rooms), Remota (72 rooms), The Singular Patagonia (57 rooms) and Rio Serrano (108 rooms) – All in Chile

Los Cerros (44 rooms) & Destino Sur Hotel & Spa (36 rooms) El Chalten

In many ways the heading is not a perfect way to describe these properties; they are larger than many lodges and have all the functions of a hotel.  In large part it is their location that sets them apart from a more traditional ‘hotel’.

Patagonia has many fine boutique lodges, in many ways you are spoilt for choice.  It’s no secret, as a result these lodges book out 8-12 months in advance.  Most are open from September until the end of April.  Each property has it’s own set of reasons for selecting; some offer private services, others favour active travellers, all offer very high standards and have excellent guides, very good cuisine whilst some also offer spa facilities.

Don’t be put off by the term ‘camp’ – probably Glamping is the better term.

I have to admit before I experienced two of these properties I misunderstood the quality – in particular at Patagonia Camp – the food here is excellent.

As with the lodges many of these unique properties book out many months in advance.  Their locations are all ‘special’.  Just as with the lodges they each offer something different, often their location, or being built on private land which means they can offer unique excursions too.

Estancias

Estancia Cerro Guido (Torres Del Paine – Chile)

Estancia Cristina (El Calafate – Argentina)

Eolo (El Calafate – Argentina)

Estancia Nibepo Aike (El Calafate – Argentina)

Estancias offer yet another aspect to exploring, and understanding, Patagonia.  Often they also offer excursions that are exclusive to each property, like the Puma Conservation Safari at Estancia Cerro Guido – Torres del Paine.

They also offer an insight into the proud history of the Argentine and gaucho way of life.  The properties they are built on are often massive sheep and cattle stations.
